This summer, the Planet Repair Institute hosted a mushroom workshop led by Audrey Steiner. We learned some basic biology about mushrooms, picked up some tips on using mushrooms to remediate polluted soils, and got a thorough overview of how to cultivate mushrooms at home.
Each participant of the workshop left with their own bag of shiitake mushroom spawn inoculated into bran, which will fruit into delicious edible shiitake mushrooms later in the year!
In advance of the workshop, we rescued a load of fresh hardwood woodchips from the waste stream. Audrey sweet talked a local chipper to dump them in front of our house. The part where she bribed him with a delicious batch of vegan cookies seemed to work wonders:)
We innoculated the woodchips with Oyster mushrooms and King Stropharia (Garden Giants) and mulched some garden beds with them. Later this year, these garden beds will start producing Mushrooms!!!
